McDonald’s is one of the latest major corporations to fall victim to data breach, leading to the leak of employee and customer information in the US, South Korea and Taiwan. The fast-food giant was able to detect and mitigate the scope of the attack in an exemplary manner. After all, this is not the first time the global chain has experienced a security breach. In 2017, they revealed a cross-site scripting vulnerability that left customer passwords exposed.
The investigation and response.
McDonalds announced they are working with law enforcement and an outside internet security vendor to conclude this investigation. While it was confirmed that no payment information was stolen, the data that was reportedly accessed included full names, emails, phone numbers and physical addresses. The number of customers and employees directly affected remains undetermined.
If you have a McDonald’s account, downloaded the app and live in the US, Korea or Taiwan, you will probably receive a letter from the chain that includes their next steps. You can easily take action, even before receiving their communications, by changing your account or app password right away.
